SMS Australia suffer comprehensive defeat to the Froths

SMS Australia slipped to a comprehensive 8-3 defeat to top of the table Froths after a lacklustre performance on Tuesday night. The omens were not good when goalkeeper Tim Haywood declared himself unfit after a bizarre rolled ankle injury picked up on the golf course, but with Leo returning after a 4 week absence and Tim John returning earlier than expected from his injury, there was every chance of a good contest. Hopes were dashed early, however, after the Froths quickly imposed themselves upon the match. What they lacked in fitness and pace, they more than made up for by playing sensible football, making easy passes, and by defending in numbers. SMS were quite the opposite as Leo struggled to adapt back into the team, having had to be told which foot to use by Mandeep on a number of occassions! They were soon 2-0 down before Bobby struck a goal back to reduce the deficit to just one. The Froths continued to play well as a team, as SMS Australia did themselves no favours by over complicating their play and failing to keep things simple. As half time approached, another Bobby goal left SMS 4-2 down, but with more questions than answers.

The second half was no different with the Froths taking complete control of the game as SMS grew increasingly frustrated. Mandeep struck the only goal for SMS in the second half but the Froths increased their lead, more unforced errors from SMS not helping their cause. The Froths are by no means unbeatable but this heavy defeat, the first in 5 matches, will serve as a warning to SMS that it will take an outstanding performance from every member of the side to defeat a team that looks destined to win the title.
