Champions League: Disappointing night for Chelsea and City
A last gasp goal from City old boy Jerome Boateng broke Sky Blues hearts in Germany as City lost 1-0. Manuel Pellegrini’s men had gone toe-to-toe with the German giants in the Allianz Arsenal – and were unlucky not win at least one penalty – but ultimately saw they Champions League opener end in defeat. Joe Hart performed well, but there was little he could do about Boateng’s 90th minute strike, which deflected past him.
Chelsea also started their Champions League campaign in underwhelming fashion with a stuttering 1-1 draw. Cesc Fabregas opened the scoring with a controversial – he appeared to foul Max Mayer in the build up – first ever Blues goal. Jose Mourinho’s men appeared to be coasting, but missed chances were punished when Klaas-Jan Huntelaar drilled home a low effort in the second 45. Loic Remy had an effort cleared off of the line, while the introduction of Diego Costa couldn’t save the three points.
